A living medieval village, one lifetime at a time
Beast, Bumps and Kings is an original medieval city builder made as a love letter to the classic town-building and settlement games of the 1990s. You start on a new land with three couples, a campfire, a natural well and a handful of gold. Everyone you see is a person with a name, a home, a family and an age, and the village only lasts if they do.From cradle to grave
- Babies are born inside the family hut, grow into boys and girls, and become working adults.
- Couples marry at the church, and the bride takes her husband's surname.
- Children can go to school and graduate as educated adults who work faster for the rest of their lives.
- Elders retire, draw a daily pension and inspire everyone around them to walk and work faster.
- People die of old age, hunger, thirst, disease, fire or battle, and those nearby grieve. A forecast warns you when retirements are coming, so the next generation is ready in time.
Every villager has needs
- Food, water, happiness, fitness, health and respect for the law are tracked for every single villager.
- They buy eggs, milk, bread, corn, potatoes, tomatoes, stew, feasts, water and cider, and pay for what they eat.
- The homeless sleep around the campfire and get miserable in the rain. A warm hut heated with coal keeps families happy and healthier.
Homes and buildings that grow
- Huts become improved houses once pottery and two kinds of food are nearby, and noble houses once they have three kinds of food, a restaurant and wine or olive oil.
- Upgrade the town hall to make room for bigger families.
- Nearly fifty building types unlock in eras, as your population, town hall and research grow: mines, quarries, clay pits, potteries, forges, breweries, wineries, olive presses, restaurants, markets, libraries, guilds, walls and watchtowers.
An economy you can feel
- You set the prices. Charge too much and the mood of the village (and its respect for the law) drops.
- Tax collectors walk the streets, merchants come to the market twice a day to buy and sell sixteen goods, and the warehouse keeps the surplus.
- Wood, stone, clay, coal and gold ore feed the workshops. The forge turns gold into coins that promote soldiers to veterans.
Milk, wheat and fresh bread
- Tame wild cows, fence a pasture and let the herd grow in spring and autumn.
- Women milk the cows by hand; the farm sells the milk and the dairy automates it.
- Plant wheat in spring, harvest it in autumn and watch the baker turn every harvest into loaves at the bakery.
- Apples become cider, grapes become wine and olives become oil.
Four seasons and a real winter
- Each year runs through spring, summer, autumn and winter, with day and night, rain, storms, lightning and snow.
- In winter the fields lie fallow, nothing grows and snow slows everyone down. The village guide tells you whether your stores will last until spring.
- Rain puts out fires; lightning can set a lonely building ablaze.
Disease, hospital and bed rest
- Flu, lurgititis and plague spread from person to person, and from the unburied dead.
- Build a hospital and a doctor will make house calls. The priest heals the sick and buries the dead in the cemetery.
- Send a sick villager home to rest: they stop spreading the illness and recover with half the damage.
Law and order
- Unhappy villagers swear, steal, brawl and worse. Soldiers and guards nearby keep them in line.
- Build a prison, hire a guard and choose the punishment for each crime: a fine, the stocks or a stay in a cell.
Invaders at the gate
- Merchants and scouts bring word of a neighbouring kingdom raising an army. You have time to build walls and train troops.
- When the column arrives it demands tribute. Pay with gold and with villagers who leave with the envoys, or refuse and fight.
- Recruit soldiers, archers, knights, mounted knights and wizards who cast fireball, lightning, mass heal and fear. Use formations, control groups and patrols.
- Wolves, wasps and giants roam out of their lairs. Strike a lair and its named boss comes out to fight, with a chest for the victor.
The dragon
- Ignarion the Devourer guards his lair on every map. He bites, sweeps groups with his tail and breathes a cone of fire that sets buildings alight.
- Wear him down, strike while he is exhausted and, if you bring him down, choose one of his wishes: richer harvests, tougher villagers, longer lives, a daily hoard of gold and more.
School, research and retirement
- Schools turn children into educated adults with a permanent production bonus.
- Scribes in the library research sharper axes, steel scythes, iron pickaxes, better scaffolding, milking, deep wells, renewed deposits, blacksmithing and alchemy.
- Retired elders are a cost and a blessing: they draw a pension, and their wisdom speeds up everyone nearby.
A guide that never lets you get lost
- The Next Steps panel lists what your village needs right now, with progress counters and a button that takes you straight to the right building.
- Village warnings point out hunger, thirst, homelessness and shortages, with a shortcut to fix each one.
Made for long evenings
- Procedural maps from a seed, in five landscapes (island, continent, archipelago, river valley and lakeland) and four sizes.
- Game speeds from 1× to 16×, optional population cap, adjustable invasion frequency.
- Ten save slots plus rotating autosaves, including one right before every invasion.
- Fully playable in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish and Simplified Chinese.
