Restore them by hand

Turn each toy in your hands, inspect its faults, and work through its restoration. Remove screws, release tabs, and slide pieces apart. Wash away dirt, tackle rust, repair damaged mechanisms, and restore worn finishes before putting everything back together.

Four toys, four restorations

• The nutcracker: Mend his loose arm and troublesome jaw, restore his painted finish, and test him with a walnut.
  
• The tin Santa: Take apart his clockwork mechanism, replace the broken spring and missing clapper, then wind him up to walk and ring his bell.
  
• The toy piano: Repair cracked and stuck keys, restore the sound-producing parts, renew the decorative print, and play the opening line of Jingle Bells.
  
• The Dayton engine: Dismantle its running gear, make replacement connecting rods, remove rust and worn paint, and rebuild the locomotive for a rolling test.

Make it a Christmas gift

When a toy is ready, write a child's name on its gift tag. Tuck it into a gift box, fold the tissue, tie the ribbon, and send the parcel up the chimney to Santa.
