Hatch from the gravel of a mountain brook as a salmon no longer than a grain of rice — and live its whole life. Omega 3 is a nature documentary you swim through: every stage of a real Atlantic salmon's life changes the rules.

• FRY AND PARR — hunt mayfly nymphs, caddis larvae and freshwater shrimp among the stones; hide from the trout in the pool and the kingfisher above.

• SMOLT — turn silver and follow the river down with your shoal, through the estuary and its nets, to the salt water.

• THE SEA YEARS — grow big on krill, sandeel, herring and sprat. Dodge the gannets that plunge from the sky and the blue sharks of the open ocean. Leap clear of the waves.

• HOMECOMING — follow the scent of your own river back home. You no longer eat: every effort spends the reserve you laid down at sea. Leap the falls, drive off the rival male, and close the circle where it began.

A REAL RIVER

Currents fastest at the surface and slow along the bed, light falling through Snell's window, pebbles that are boulders when you are two centimetres long. Real species, real behaviour — your salmon grows only by eating what fits in its mouth.
