You are given three choices before each battle, in which you can choose any permutation of powers, units, structures, and upgrades. There is no gold based economy.
Traditional units and structures - towers, swordsmen, archers, guerillas, knights, spearmen, etc - each with their own strong and weak match-ups.
Powers that you can assign the villages that remain in effect as long as the village stands. Eg. "River Fury" inflicts damage on enemies that cross the river.
Match units and structures to their strengths. Eg. Place Guerillas on forest tiles and watch the enemy have a hard time killing them off.
Enemies spawn from caves, capture and convert your villages into caves, increasing their spawns points.
Wildcards that you can apply on any turn. Eg. Applying the "Deep Wounds" wildcard will instantly kill all enemies that have just 1 health remaining.
Enemies come with a variety of abilities. Eg. Steamrollers beeline your villages and utterly destroy all units and structures that stand in the way.
