Six species, two factions

Stand with the Warren Compact as a Mouse, Squirrel or Chipmunk: burrowers and builders who hold the forests and lowlands and win by outlasting you. Or join the Ashborne League as a Rat, Lizard or Gerbil: scavengers and raiders who hold the wasteland and the coastal cliffs and win by getting there first. Every species has its own history and its own pair of abilities, from the mouse's Scurry to the chipmunk's Burrow Dash, and you choose where your story begins.

Earn reputation with your faction, with each species' kin and with the towns you work for, all the way from Hostile to Revered. Merchants price by it, your choices in the story shift it, and every rank of faction reputation unlocks a new faction ability: tunnel travel and group healing for the Compact, the old routes and a sudden scatter for the League.

A burrow of your own

Every character starts with a scrape in the dirt. Dig out new rooms as you find better picks, wall them in dirt, wood or stone, and fill them with beds, workstations and storage. Raise a barn, smithy, greenhouse or triage tent, then tunnel out to your faction's outposts.

Live your way

Wavertree Mountain is an adventure, but it is also a home. Not every creature wants to storm a dungeon. Some want to tend a garden on the edge of the Southern Forest, trade rare seeds on the beach where even rival factions do business, or spend an evening at the tavern swapping stories with strangers who become friends.

• Pick a specialization, from farmer and angler to engineer, doctor and smith. Each one makes something the others need.
  
• Grow crops, fish, raise bugs in your barn and cook for your friends. You can play as a pacifist and still thrive.
  
• Craft armor, weapons and gadgets for yourself and other players.
  
• Buy and sell at the regional auction houses, and become the island's go-to supplier of whatever you make best.

Peaceful Mode

Switch on Peaceful Mode and the island's creatures won't start fights with you. If you want a fight, you pick it, and you stay out of player-vs-player battles entirely.

• Peaceful mission chains run through every stage of the game, so farming, fishing, cooking and crafting can carry you from your first day to the late game.
  
• Peaceful and non-peaceful players share the same world and the same groups. One friend can tend the garden while another heads out to fight, and you're still helping each other.
  
• A blue "!" marks every mission you can finish without fighting. The Long Post sends you across all nine zones as a runner for the chipmunk post, and every zone has smaller peaceful stories, so farming, fishing, cooking and crafting can carry you from your first day to the late game.

Fight for the island

Claim outposts and fortify them, and everyone on your side gets richer resource nodes, faster crafting, calmer critters and cheaper merchants. Hold them through PvP skirmishes and sieges, or lose them and watch the rewards go with them.

Fight with everything from sword and spear to slingshot and boomerang, each with abilities of its own. Block, shield bash and swap weapon sets mid-fight, and if you go down, a friend can get you back on your feet. Settle a score with a duel, or declare war on a rival guild.

• Gather for festivals and island-wide events, with an event calendar so you never miss one
  
• Veterans can mentor new arrivals, and block, mute and report tools keep the island friendly
