About the game

Grow fluorescent cell colonies in a living evolution sandbox. Guide mutations, breed new strains, and outcompete rival labs for territory. Every cell has its own genome, so no two experiments play out the same.

Originalbeschreibung auf Steam

In Substrate: Emergence, every cell is fully simulated. Watch them grow, and decide which ones survive. Experimentation is your advantage.

Pick out your most promising cells and shape how they evolve. Guide mutations, set off chemical reactions, or take direct control of a single cell when you need to step in.

Rival labs are growing their own cultures. Spread across the Bionet, claim zones to starve them of resources, and use chemistry as a weapon.

Every cell has its own genome, which decides how it looks, works, and behaves. Nothing is scripted. Each cell runs on a small neural network shaped by evolution, so its behavior can surprise you.

Catalogue your strains, trace their family trees across generations, and refine your best cells into super strains.

Every cell has a unique look that reflects its genes, so you can watch mutations spread through a colony as it grows.

Substrate: Emergence is in Early Access. The core simulation is playable now, and progression, balancing, tutorials, and new features will keep improving with community feedback.

About the Developer

Substrate: Emergence is a solo project shaped by my background in cellular neuroscience and my work as a musician and abstract painter. I design the game systems, simulation, procedural visuals, and sound, and maintain the codebase myself. The soundtrack was made with help from a few friends.
