Night work, fair pay, ask nothing
Hollowmere, the thirty-first of October. Three weeks behind on the rent, you answer an advertisement for night work at St. Ossian's cemetery. The Keeper has a stall, a lodge, and a stairway that goes down further than anyone has followed it.Go down. Come back up. Maybe.
Every crypt floor is dug anew: catacombs, cisterns, caverns, labyrinths and terraced necropolises, two or three levels deep, joined by broken spiral stairs and ladders. Some floors fork, with a carved stone naming what waits down each way. The stairs lead deeper; the rope leads home. Every floor down pays better and asks more of you.Every find is a bargain
Artifacts roll their blessings and curses the moment you pick them up, and some keep one hidden until you've carried them a floor or read them by candlelight. Curses raise the price, and they wear at your sanity for as long as you carry them. Let it slip and the crypt starts to lie: footsteps a beat behind yours, glints that aren't there, a rope out that isn't, walls that breathe. And at the very bottom of your nerve, things that are real. You are not the only one down there
The Warden listens for you, so crouch, and throw a coin to send it elsewhere. Chalk your way so you can find it back. Some nights another digger works the floors ahead of you with a lantern, emptying coffins before you reach them. Chests that bite, a Lich in the deep, and worse further down: the journal keeps a page on everything you live to describe.Finders, keepers
Die, and everything you carried stays down there with you. Make it back to that floor and you can take it all back, if you can find yourself. The Seven Seals
Every fifth floor, a seal lies in the reliquary. Carry six of them out and the seventh waits at the last gate, thirty-five floors down. Bring it up, and the Keeper will ask you for it.Up top
