Steam demo vs playtest vs Early Access: what can you play?

Understand three different ways to try or follow a Steam game, what access means, and which release date you should check.

By the TryNextGame editorial team

Demo: a sample of the main game

A demo lets you try part of a game. Its content and availability are chosen by the developer, and it may appear before or after the full release. A demo does not establish how long the complete game is. Check the demo and main-game pages separately for requirements and supported languages.

Steam Playtest: access to a test

Steam Playtest is a separate testing application associated with a main game. Public sign-ups may let you request access, but a request is not a guarantee of admission. Testing may run only during selected periods. Follow the developer’s instructions for feedback and check whether your access is currently active.

Early Access: an unfinished game offered for sale

Steam Early Access lets developers sell games while they are still being developed. It is different from a demo or a playtest sign-up. Read the developer’s Early Access explanation, current features and known limitations. Decide based on what is playable today rather than assuming every planned feature will arrive.

How to read TryNextGame labels

The DEMO label refers to availability found during our latest check; the release date belongs to the main game. Playtest sign-ups may require developer approval. We do not label a game as Early Access without evidence or promise future access. The Steam store page is the final place to confirm availability before downloading or purchasing.
